In simple words about who a sociopath is and why he is dangerous

People are different, this is normal, some behave recklessly and stand out from the crowd. Do you know what a sociopath is? Knowing the definition and signs of sociopathy, you may recognize such a personality in yourself.

Sociopathy is a personality disorder in which a person ignores or violates people's rights and does not follow the rules accepted by society. A sociopath is a person who is unable to adapt to society.

Girls, screenwriters and psychiatrists like sociopaths. Why? It's simple. Women love bad boys, script writers see them as ideal movie characters, and psychiatrists use them to defend their dissertations.

The main problem of a true sociopath is the lack of boundaries. His behavior leaves much to be desired; he is not responsible for his actions. The personality disorder does not cause suffering because he does not understand that he is acting incorrectly. Almost everyone who suffers from sociopathy is intelligent and incredibly resourceful. They lie sophisticatedly and are fluent in the art of manipulation.

According to scientists, every person has two forms of existence from birth.

  1. A biological creature is an individual that, in comparison with the animals inhabiting the planet, has developed intelligence.
  2. Man is a rational being living in social conditions. The creation and use of material and spiritual culture is carried out through joint efforts with the people around us.

Traits of humanity have been embedded in the genome over many millennia. As a result, the human body and nervous system, after completion of formation, are fully adapted to the process of socialization. We are talking about training, education, and the adoption of moral standards.

The conception of a sociopath is accompanied by a genetic disorder, when the hereditary memory is unable to form the qualities of a social person in the brain. A sociopath is a person who, due to a genetic disease, is unable to complete the process of socialization and integrate into the life of society.

Medically sociopathic

Sociopathy, otherwise called dissocial personality disorder

"is a medical disease of a psychoneurological nature.

Signs of sociopathy

the following:

  • Ignoring social norms;
  • Impulsiveness;
  • Aggressiveness;
  • Limited ability to form attachments.

Doctors can make such a diagnosis to a person who has at least three of the following phenomena: indifference to others, disregard for social norms, difficulties in establishing relationships with other people, lack of guilt, a tendency to blame others for all his problems, which leads to conflict .

Sociopaths are often constantly irritated. Some scientists also call sociopaths “ antisocial personalities.”

" The above signs of sociopaths force them to commit crimes, organize sects, and get involved with drugs and alcohol. Such people are treated by a psychotherapist, but only a few notice a behavioral disorder, which is why sociopathy is very difficult to identify.

What is a sociopath in simple terms?

When using this term in everyday speech, we rarely mean a person with neuropsychiatric disorders. Most often, when someone says: “What a sociopath he is!”, they mean a person’s inability to understand each other and build relationships. Moreover, sociopaths mean extremely taciturn and uncommunicative people.

It should be remembered that “sociopathy” is a medical diagnosis, the essence of which was described above, so the thoughtless use of such a word is unacceptable. If a person does not get along well with other people, then it is much better to use the epithet “non-contact” or “uncommunicative” in relation to him, because only a qualified psychotherapist can make a diagnosis of “sociopath”.

If a person is an introvert, then his character may be particularly unsociable; this does not mean at all that he has this or that personality disorder.

Where does it come from?

And there is no exact answer to this question, only versions :

  • family and environment;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • suffered stress in childhood, head injuries.

It has long been assumed that the main reason for the development of the disorder is improper upbringing. What casts doubt on this theory is the fact that children raised by sociopathic parents often grow up to be normal people.

The opposite also happens: a child becomes a carrier of a personality disorder, although he grew up in a prosperous environment.

Most experts believe that the main cause of the disease is genetic defects .

Studies have shown that the encephalogram of people with diagnosed sociopathy differs from a similar study of a healthy person.

But what kind of violation entails such consequences is unknown .

Highly active sociopath

This term was first used in the BBC television series Sherlock. Modern medicine does not use such gradation, so, most likely, we can say that this phrase was introduced as a “click phrase.”

The series meant that the main character flouts social norms by putting any effort into it. Unlike the average sociopath, who is driven only by his desires, a high-functioning sociopath may specifically try to destroy relationships with other people.

Another famous example of such a sociopath is Dr. House

. Behind his antisocial actions you can see his inquisitive mind and quick wit, charm - this is what attracts viewers. The producers and creators of the series have found a wonderful niche for attracting people - a person with a complex character and destiny, but at the same time a very smart person.

Signs of a Sociopath

The signs of a sociopath have already been written above, but it’s worth adding a few more symptoms to this list. For sociopaths there are no boundaries; they elevate their desires to absolutes and try to achieve them by any means, without disdaining the feelings and thoughts of other people or social norms.

Not a single sociopath loves people, even (and sometimes even more so) loved ones. Such people only know how to love themselves, but scientists have found that they can fall in love. Only the object of love will have a very hard time, because the sociopath will not take into account his desires. Many people with personality disorders often lie and cheat. They are also unusually smart, because in order to achieve their goals they have to somehow develop.

Sociopaths are people who keep themselves to themselves

who prefer to be alone than to go out with friends (although they have very few or no friends).

As we see, you can live with sociopathy, but it is unlikely that you will be able to cope with it without the help of a psychiatrist.

Sociopath and social phobe: the difference between them

While the word "sociopath" is firmly entrenched in many people's vocabulary, "sociophobic" is a much more applicable word for most people (those we think of as sociopaths).

Social phobia is also a mental diagnosis, but it consists in the fact that such people are afraid of speaking in front of large numbers of people, afraid of talking with strangers (it is even difficult for them to call an ambulance, if necessary, they simply do not know how to start a conversation). Under severe stress, social phobes may experience panic attacks; a psychologist (and not a psychotherapist, like sociopaths) will help to cope with this, or you can get rid of your phobias on your own, just by training your willpower.

Social phobes are not aggressive creatures capable of showing empathy - this is their main difference from sociopaths. Moreover, various fears and anxieties do not indicate a personality disorder; everything can be corrected without medication (which, again, cannot be said about sociopaths).

Social phobes can be quite sociable people, but they just need to get used to a new person in their environment.

Diagnostics

Recognizing a sociopath is a useful skill; there are not many of them (about 1% of all people on the planet), but they are very active and try to charm everyone around them just in case.

Only a psychiatrist can make a serious diagnosis. But if a person has discovered 3 or more of the 10 signs given below in himself or his loved ones, then this is a reason to be wary.

So:

  1. Intentional damage to things - often other people's. Sometimes the desire to harm through the destruction of property takes another form - the sociopath hides important documents or objects, using them later depending on the circumstances. For example, a husband constantly hides his wife’s passport in order to instill in her the idea of her own mental illness.
  2. Failure to introspect . A person lacks the ability to determine cause-and-effect relationships. Each time he makes the same mistakes, without drawing conclusions from previous experience, and even acts to his own detriment.
  3. Increased aggression brings many sociopaths to the dock. In a fit of rage, they are capable of physical violence. Some individuals suffering from the disorder are not inclined to give up (usually for fear of condemnation), which does not negate their malignancy.
  4. Constant lying is an indispensable companion of a sociopath. A person lies for any reason and even without reason, often getting confused in his own deception and forgetting what he said and to whom. For example, a lady tells her friend that her fiancé gave her a new fur coat, and the next day she tells the same friend that she earned the mink herself by getting a well-paid position.
  5. Repeated stays in places of deprivation of liberty indicate a person’s desire for antisocial actions.
  6. Lack of fear, disregard for the safety of oneself and others . A striking example is aggressive driving behavior, including drunk driving.
  7. A person realizes that he is doing wrong, but does not feel guilty . A feeling of complete permissiveness gradually develops.
  8. Threats, harassment, blackmail. They are used against those who have “seen through” the sociopath and harmed him or, at least, have such an opportunity. Usually these are former partners (less often, partners).
  9. The presence of grandiose plans in words and the absence of attempts to implement them in reality.
  10. Irresponsibility .
    Even if a person is caught doing a bad thing, he blames everyone around him: his wife, husband, parents, president. A sociopath and responsibility are incompatible concepts; he will always shift the blame to the one who happens to be nearby.

Symptoms that always accompany the disorder:

  • addiction of any kind (alcohol, gaming, food);
  • instability in work activity: frequent job changes, conflicts with colleagues;
  • inability to start a family: constant marriages and divorces, sometimes with the same partner;
  • manipulating others for gain;
  • ridiculous and unfounded claims towards loved ones (“wrong” facial expression);
  • obfuscation and misrepresentation of facts.

Sociopaths find it easy to lie and manipulate because they are unfamiliar with guilt .

Sociopathy is often accompanied by OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), which manifests itself in obsessive actions reminiscent of rituals. This may be an excessive desire for cleanliness: showering five times a day or thorough cleaning every day.

How to behave with such a person?

If signs of sociopathy are detected in a loved one, doctors advise taking him to a psychotherapist to prescribe treatment. What if this is not your loved one, but, for example, your boss? It's more complicated here. Again, many recommend simply not communicating with a sociopath, since he may pose a threat to society, and it is even worth quitting your job.

But what if you value work? Firstly, your emotional and physiological health also needs to be valued, so set your priorities correctly. Secondly, keep your communication with the sociopath to a minimum, try to carry out all his instructions and do not enter into open conflict. It is worth carefully checking everything that is in your area of responsibility, watch what you sign, as sociopaths are prone to fraud.

Some of the most famous sociopaths in history were Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. Think about it, and then decide whether you are willing to work with a miniature Stalin or Hitler.

In this article, we looked at what a sociopath is and how to behave with them. If you notice at least three signs of sociopathy in yourself, it is best to consult a specialist, since delays can lead to more serious disorders.

Treatment of sociopathy

Dissocial personality disorder is difficult to treat, but there are several methods that can partially correct the behavior.

Medication for sociopathy

Dissocial disorder is not a disease, and to date no effective medications have been developed to treat sociopathy. If sociopathy is accompanied by severe anxiety and depression, antidepressants are used in these cases. To control impulsivity and aggression, it is recommended to use mood stabilizers and some antipsychotic drugs. But it must be taken into account that individuals with social disorder are prone to the formation of chemical dependence, so the prescription of medications should be carried out taking this feature into account.
