How to deal with failures? 14 August 2020, 00:00 | Katya Kozhevnikova

We all know that we learn from mistakes, and only those who do nothing make mistakes. And still, failures cause us a lot of mental suffering. Let's figure out why this happens, and whether it is possible to experience failures without harm to the nerves. And even for your own benefit.

Failures hurt self-esteem. I wasn’t appreciated at work, which means I’m not worthy of praise. A guy dumped me means there is nothing to love me for. Consciously or subconsciously, a person blames himself for any failure. And sometimes my thoughts go to extremes: “I will never succeed! Nobody will ever love me! And if you keep such an attitude in your head, a person will really begin an endless streak of failures.

In addition, failures almost always mean wasted effort. And also the fear of uncertainty: after all, a person unexpectedly found himself in a situation completely different from the one he planned to be in. All this, naturally, does not improve your mood, and in some cases can lead to depression.

Let's think about what will help us experience failures productively.

Analysis

When we have failed, the last thing we want to think about is that traumatic experience. We try to drive away sad thoughts from ourselves, but subconsciously we still return to them. There is no point in playing hide and seek with your own mistakes: failure must be recognized and accepted. And also analyze and understand what led to it and what we can do to prevent this from happening again. Only in this case will our mistake teach us something.

Action

Having experienced failure, most of all a person wants to hide with his head under the blanket, do nothing and selflessly feel sorry for himself. It seems to us that after the stress we have endured, we deserve a vacation. But you can’t rest from failure. On the contrary, idleness forces us to mentally return to our mistake again and again. The longer we do nothing, the more our self-esteem suffers and the more scary it is to start something new.

Therefore, do not reward yourself with rest: immediately take on a new task. This way you will very quickly forget about your previous failure.

Prospects

Every coin has two sides, and failure is no exception. Even failure is fraught with unobvious prospects. Being fired from your job is an incentive to finally start your own business. If you broke up with your boyfriend, it means that you are now open to finding your true love. Your work was criticized - thanks to this you can become better.

Instead of berating yourself for failure, try to find the positive aspects in it and make the most of them. Many of my friends told me that it was failures that caused positive changes in their lives.

Do you easily cope with failures?

How to cope with depression?

The problem of coping with depression is becoming more common. The reason is that a person does not always realize what is happening to him, which is why he is not able to find ways to quickly eliminate the unpleasant condition. To cope with depression, you must first acknowledge its presence. Moreover, you need not to cherish this state in yourself, but to see how happily you can live, how uninteresting the world becomes while a person is in it.

cope with depression

Depression has existed throughout history. However, for some reason it is becoming increasingly difficult for modern people to cope with it. What is the reason? Psychologists find answers in the lifestyle of past and modern people. If in ancient times people were forced to lead an active lifestyle, work physically, think less with their “smart” heads and analyze the situation, then modern people are less active, think more than they do, and constantly focus on troubles.

There is such an expression as “woe from wit”, when a person may have a lot of knowledge, but not use it or do not know what to do with it. Modern man is very smart, but his stupidity is manifested in the fact that he is simply not able to use his own knowledge. And the former person can be compared to a child who does not understand anything, but feels that it is unpleasant for him. He simply does everything to get away from what is unpleasant to him.

Sometimes you just need to allow yourself not to be depressed. This is quite difficult to do until you understand that a person is capable of managing his own conditions.

  1. What prevents a person from smiling?
  2. What prevents a person from doing what he loves?
  3. What prevents a person from going out into the sun and enjoying its warm rays?
  4. What prevents a person from simply saying to himself: “Enough is enough. I'm tired of being depressed"?

People simply enjoy the fact that they can do nothing, citing depression. If at first you can understand that a person is simply tired of constant failures or troubles, then later it can no longer be called laziness.

To cope with depression on your own, you first need to want it, and not just try or pretend that something is being done.

  • Change your attitude towards those situations that make you depressed. A person is asked to reduce the importance of some of them. There is no need to worry about anything, as this will only lead to exhaustion. It’s better to focus on what’s important, and just take everything else as trivial.
  • Stay calm in stressful situations. We will not suggest that you avoid stress. Just learn not to create situations for yourself that will cause you stress. At the same time, there is no escape from troubles. It is better to learn not to run away from them, but to easily cope with them.
  • Postpone important tasks until later. If you feel a loss of strength and the inability to cope with something, allow yourself to resolve all the issues later. You will still have time to resolve important matters, but now allow yourself to rest.
  • Get plenty of rest. Depression suggests that, most likely, before it appeared, you took on too many responsibilities and work, often encountering failures and the inability to complete everything on time. If that's the case, then save yourself the trouble of doing work that other people have to do. If you just work a lot, then postpone some tasks until later to give yourself a break.
  • Communicate with people more often. Moreover, the circle of communication should be varied and interesting. The more people you communicate with, the less you get stuck on one thing. Topics with different people constantly overlap and sometimes do not coincide. At the same time, these people should be interesting to communicate with, pleasant and friendly.
  • Focus on enjoyable activities. Things that are not interesting to do lead to depression. A person may have had to spend a lot of effort on doing things that do not give him anything good. Here you need to please yourself. Make time to pursue your hobbies.
  • Move, avoid idleness. Depression develops where there is stagnation. Please note that when people are depressed, they lie on their beds and suffer. Don't allow yourself to be lazy. Play sports. Go to the beach. Go shopping. Don't let your negative feelings keep you stuck at home.
  • Eat right. Moreover, do not forget to eat in principle. Many people get so caught up in their worries and activities that they don’t remember the last time they ate. It is easy to throw a hungry person off balance. And if you are full, then you are more satisfied.

If all the recommendations do not work, do not neglect the help of a psychologist. Despite the negative attitude towards these specialists, it is better to take care of your own mental health rather than the opinion of society. It is better to get rid of depression with a psychologist than to spend your life always experiencing it.

Symptoms of neurosis

How does the disease manifest itself? Neurosis can be diagnosed by increased anxiety and fear, restlessness and irritability, decreased performance and tearfulness, absent-mindedness and forgetfulness, as well as deterioration of cognitive functions. The patient is constantly in a bad mood, he cannot rest, relax and calm down.

A person suffering from neurosis very often worries, perceiving any changes and news only as negative. It is characterized by a sharp increase in the level of sensitivity and lability of mood. If a person begins to develop neurosis, then literally everything begins to irritate him. He is dissatisfied with bright lights and loud sounds, strong odors and temperature changes. He also exhibits a negative reaction to many other factors. In addition to the above examples of psycho-emotional manifestations during neurosis, the physical condition also begins to deteriorate. A person often experiences headaches and dizziness, appetite and sleep are disturbed. A more rare manifestation of the disease is pain in the chest, abdomen, joints and muscles. Moreover, all of them are observed in the absence of pathologies of systems and organs.

This is why it is so important to start treating the “disease of doubt” on time. How to cope with neurosis and regain a calm life and health?

How to cope with depression on your own?

It is possible to cope with depression on your own if you respond to its occurrence in time. In mild form, depression is not dangerous. You can go hiking on sunny days or do sports or physical activity. However, with severe depression, things become more complicated. A person usually already revels in his condition and does not want to get rid of it, finding various arguments and justifications.

To cope with depression on your own, do not allow yourself to isolate yourself in the house, close the curtains and listen to sad music. One day you can afford this behavior. But on the second day, wipe your tears and go outside to people. It is not recommended to resort to such methods of getting rid of depression as drinking alcohol, taking pills, going to nightclubs or other places where “free love” flourishes. Why?

  1. Alcohol ruins your health. You will have to drink every day in order to once again relax and not think about problems.
  2. The pills will only calm you down temporarily. What will you do then when their effect stops?
  3. Nightclubs and other places with “free love” will not solve your problems, even if the cause of your depression is unhappy love or separation from a loved one. You need to resolve all issues with your loved ones or let them go and move on with your life.

To cope with depression, you need to realize that all problems are created by a person himself. If you have encountered failures that are causing you to suffer, then it’s time to realize that you created them yourself. You have done things that lead to failure. Trying to find someone to blame, you forget that you are no less guilty than others. When trying to find an answer to how to solve a problem, you forget that you have to start by changing your actions.

If depression has really exhausted you, then you should admit your own powerlessness. Ask family or friends for help. Don't be ashamed of your powerlessness. It’s better to get rid of it so as not to sink further into depression.

Stress is the cause of many diseases

Stress is talked about everywhere. We all know how harmful its constant exposure is. However, we still feel nervous every day. What diseases can arise as a result of constant exposure to stress?

Nowadays, people are several times more likely to experience stress than they were several decades ago. 3 years of data show that millions of people experience stress every day. Young people who live intensive lives are at greatest risk. Adults cope with stress more successfully. Regardless of whether it is true or not, everyone can see it by looking at their own lives.

Do you often feel stressed? Are you worried about a number of things that surround you? Do you often get into arguments and conflicts with others? Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you feel tired and overworked in the middle of the working day? Are you feeling unhappy and confused? Do you live in fear for your future?

Positive answers to these questions strongly indicate that you are under stress. Stress can occur as a result of a shocking event that subsequently affects your emotional state, or as a result of prolonged negative thoughts and events. Stress itself is a normal reaction of the body that helps it adapt to changes.

When a problem or sudden change arises, good or bad (change of home, job, marital status), the emotional arousal we experience is stress. In these situations, stress helps us activate, focus on the problem, increase blood pressure, increase the release of certain hormones in the body.

There is a problem when stress becomes a chronic disease that becomes part of our daily life and gradually affects our emotional and physical well-being. What diseases and illnesses can chronic stress lead to?

Diabetes

The causes of diabetes are hereditary factors and poor lifestyle choices. In today's lifestyle, another major cause of diabetes is stress. After severe stress and a number of negative emotions, blood sugar levels rise greatly, which can lead to the development of diabetes.

Hypertension

Hypertension is a disease that affects more and more young people. The reason is lifestyle and daily stress. When we are angry at something, the level of adrenaline increases and the energy potential of the cells is mobilized. When the “danger” passes, the balance in the body should return to normal. However, this does not happen and the body begins to systematically maintain high blood pressure. Hypertension is one of the most common causes of death today.

Joint problems, back pain

Following research in recent years, scientists are firmly convinced that stress is the main cause of joint disease and back pain. Neck and shoulder pain occurs as a result of chronic stress. It is possible that this pain may continue to spread throughout the back, and at some point the person will be unable to sit or work due to severe pain. Very often, patients spend months visiting orthopedists and traumatologists' offices, not realizing that they are suffering from stress.

Gastritis, ulcer

Stress inevitably leads to stomach problems, heartburn and, as a result, gastritis and ulcers. Nervous people eat irregularly, acidity increases and the stomach lining is damaged. It is very common for symptoms to worsen when a person is under stress.

You should not be worried about potential diseases that chronic stress leads to, but mobilize and get rid of the constant stress that surrounds us. Relax, think positively, surround yourself with people you love. Don't let stress creep into your life. Be positive and calm down. And the next time you get angry about something, first think that it's not worth it. Think positively - out of love for others and, above all, out of love for your health.

Weight loss under stress

Stress leads to obesity. It's clear. But fears, sadness, jealousy and suspicion can lead to rapid and extremely unhealthy weight loss. The stress factor must be eliminated immediately.

The loss of a loved one, unhappy love, illness or other difficult life situations can destroy us both mentally and physically. Of course, stressful conditions can also cause sudden weight loss. Weight loss, which has nothing to do with every woman's thirst. Lifeless eyes, sunken cheeks, pale skin, and protruding bones are just some of the outward signs of stress-induced weight loss.

Hormones and weight loss

The body undergoes a continuous process of synthesis and breakdown of cells and various substances.

Body weight increases when a person thinks, communicates, eats, or works. And when corticosteroid hormones combine with thyroid hormones, weight falls. The explosive mixture burns protein and fat and causes dramatic weight loss.

This hormonal imbalance is characteristic of stressful conditions. Sometimes they are accompanied by muscle tension, sweating and increased timbre. Other times we carry deep, painful experiences without outward signs. Then weight loss is as active as an hour and a half workout in the gym.

Increased production of the hormone adrenaline during stress leads to damage to lymphocytes, the most important cells of the immune system. Hydrochloric acid accumulates in the stomach, and fewer digestive enzymes are produced.

The food remains digested, and hydrochloric acid irritates the walls of the stomach and duodenum. The risk of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases increases.

Psychotherapy

Sometimes, even despite a course of drug therapy, the patient again turns to the doctor with the following request: “Help me cope with neurosis.” The return of the problem is due to the fact that medications in most cases can only provide a temporary effect. After all, in order to get rid of neurosis, a person will need to radically change his attitude towards his anxieties and fears. And psychotherapy can help him with this. It is this medical direction that will allow the patient to understand the essence of his problem in order to then change his attitude towards it. Only after this does it become clear how to cope with neurosis on your own and stop being afraid.

What is psychotherapy? This is one of the methods of treating pathological mental conditions, including neurosis. When using this method of treatment, psychological counseling is provided to the patient. During the conversation, the specialist aims to solve personal, emotional and other similar problems of a person, which are one of the causes of neuroses. When using this method, the patient must visit his doctor regularly, usually weekly.

To eliminate neuroses, one of the types of psychotherapy is most often used - cognitive-behavioral. This method allows a person to detect behavioral and mental attitudes that are the causes of neurosis, and then change them.

Another effective way to treat the “disease of doubt” is complex therapy. It involves the simultaneous use of a medicinal and psychotherapeutic approach.

V. Levy's method

How to cope with obsessive-compulsive disorder on your own? The famous Soviet psychotherapist Vladimir Levi proposed his method for eliminating the problem. According to the recommendations of this specialist, anxiety neurosis can be defeated by getting rid of negative emotions. At the same time, in order to quickly relax, you will need to tense more. In such a situation, you should go to a sports club or gym. Here a person should tense literally every muscle, showing how he knows how to get angry to the fullest. You can also jump and stomp, scream and clench your hands into fists. The most important thing is to do all this with all your might. This way, all nervousness will be squeezed out through muscle tension. After this, you can feel an improvement in your mood.

It is worth keeping in mind that this method does not always work for prolonged neuroses. However, in case of sudden temper, it works flawlessly.
