The human nervous system is the command center of the entire organism. If there are problems, one can observe developmental deviations, both physical, emotional and mental. Currently, there are a huge number of drugs that can work wonders and help cope with many ailments. One of them is Zyprexa. The article will review the instructions for use for this medicine. Zyprexa is a drug that is often prescribed for problems with the nervous system.
Pharmacological properties of the drug
This drug belongs to the group of antipsychotics with a wide range of effects on many receptor systems. Numerous studies have been conducted, during which it was revealed that olanzapine, the active substance of this drug, has antagonism towards serotonin, dopamine and cholinergic receptors.
It has also been found that olanzapine reduces the excitability of mesolimbic dopaminergic neurons and has little effect on striatal nerve pathways that are involved in the regulation of motor functions.
The active ingredient of the drug enhances the anti-anxiety effect during the anxiolytic test.
The medicine "Zyprexa" is available in two forms:
- In the form of film-coated tablets.
- Lyophilisate for the preparation of solution for injection.
The drug contains olanzapine as the main active ingredient. Auxiliary components in tablets are:
- Crospovidone.
- Magnesium stearate.
- Lactose monohydrate.
- Cellulose.
- Hyprolose.
The film coating of the tablets contains white dye, blue edible ink, carnauba wax and hypromellose.
The composition of the lyophilisate for the preparation of solution for injection includes, in addition to the main active ingredient, lactose monohydrate and tartaric acid.
Only the doctor should decide in what form to prescribe the drug to treat the patient.

Drug treatment regimen
What does the instructions for use say about this? Zyprexa is prescribed at the beginning of treatment for schizophrenia in a minimal dosage. At first, it will be enough to take 10 mg of the medicine once a day. The effectiveness of treatment is not affected by food intake.
The therapeutic dosage of the drug can vary from 5 to 20 mg, but it is set individually for each patient, taking into account his condition. After all the studies have been completed, if the patient tolerates the drug well, the dose can be increased, but only under the supervision of a physician.
In the presence of persecutory mania, Zyprexa tablets are prescribed in an amount of 15 mg once a day. During therapy, it is necessary to monitor the patient's condition and, if necessary, adjust the dosage.
If the patient suffers from liver or kidney failure, then he is prescribed the drug Zyprexa 5 mg; if the condition is normal and the drug is well tolerated, then the dosage can be gradually increased.
The drug is often prescribed to patients by injection. Before giving the injection, it is necessary to properly dilute the lyophilisate. To do this, dissolve the contents of the bottle in 2 ml of water for injection. The prepared solution should be transparent and yellow in color.
How to use? Zyprexa, as already mentioned, is prescribed only by a specialist. Therefore, the treatment regimen, if therapy is carried out at home, must be discussed with the doctor.
When preparing the solution for injection, you must remember:
- Zyprexa can only be dissolved in sterile water.
- This drug and Diazepam should not be mixed in the same syringe.
- The combination of Zyprexa and Haloperidol leads to a weakening of the effect of the first drug.
If your doctor prescribes Zyprexa, the dosage will depend on your diagnosis. For example, for schizophrenia, the initial dose is 10 mg once a day. The drug should be administered intramuscularly only. If the patient’s condition requires it, then a second injection of the medicine can be given, but not earlier than two hours after the first injection.
For elderly patients and in the presence of certain chronic diseases, the drug is prescribed in a dosage of 2.5-5 mg.
Considering that the administration of Zyprexa can provoke a drop in blood pressure, it is better to be in a supine position during the injection, especially if drowsiness and dizziness appear after the injection. You need to lie down until the doctor, after examination, records the absence of a decrease in blood pressure and bradycardia.
It is also worth recalling that it should be taken gradually, since the drug is characterized by a withdrawal syndrome. It is imperative to discuss this issue with your doctor.
With long-term therapy with Zyprexa, after some time the injections are replaced with tablets in a dosage of 5 to 20 mg per day. The doctor will definitely explain in detail how long Zyprexa should be taken. We have looked at what the remedy treats and what the treatment regimen is, but we must not forget about the undesirable consequences.
Similar means
If it is necessary to replace a drug, its structural analogs are used, which have an identical mechanism of action. The most popular of them:
Zalasta. Polish medicine that is widely used for neuroses. It comes in tablet form that contains 2.5 to 20 mg of olanzapine. The cost of the drug is slightly lower than Zyprexa - a package of 28 tablets of 10 mg costs about 2,700 rubles.
- Olanzapine. A domestic antipsychotic drug, which is available in tablet form. Relatively inexpensive, but high-quality medicine. The price in pharmacies varies from 280 to 330 rubles.
- Egolanza. A neuroleptic drug produced by EGIS Pharmaceutical Plant CJSC (Hungary). Prices for the drug range from 1,100 rubles for 28 5 mg tablets and up to 1,900 for the same amount of 10 mg.
Side effects of the drug
Almost all drugs for the treatment of diseases of the nervous system belong to the group that is not recommended to be taken without consulting a doctor. This is no exception for Zyprexa, since this drug has a fairly extensive list of side effects:
- The nervous system can react with headache and dizziness, general weakness and insomnia, amnesia and various phobias. Tremors and muscle stiffness are also possible. Tinnitus, deafness, pain in the eyes, and impaired taste are often observed.
- From the cardiovascular system, tachycardia, decreased blood pressure, changes in ECG parameters, and cyanosis are possible. Tests may show neutropenia, eosinophilia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia. In severe cases, cardiac arrest may occur.

- The skin may react with the appearance of excessive dryness, dermatitis, and ulcerative formations.
- Urticaria often occurs.

- Quentiax;
- Quetiapine;
- Ketilept;
- Closasten;
- Kutipin;
- Lakvel;

- Nantharid;
- Servitel;
- Seroquel;
- Saphris.
Taking the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding
If a woman is taking Zyprexa and becomes pregnant, she should inform her doctor. This medicine should be taken during pregnancy only in cases where the benefit to the mother significantly outweighs the potential risk to the developing baby.
Zyprexa is an antipsychotic that can pass into breast milk, so during drug therapy you should not continue feeding your baby, it is better to switch to artificial feeding.
Special recommendations during therapy
Psychiatrists often opt for the drug Zyprexa, the price of which, unfortunately, is quite high. Thus, one package of tablets (5 mg, 28 pcs.) will cost 2,500 rubles, and one bottle for injections will cost 239 rubles.
Almost all drugs from this group can provoke the development of neuroleptic syndrome, and Zyprexa is no exception. During treatment with the drug, care must be taken, and if an unstable pulse or tachycardia, arrhythmia or sweating appears, or body temperature rises, then you should tell your doctor about it.
Clinical manifestations of neuroleptic malignant syndrome require that the drug be immediately discontinued.
Clinical studies were conducted, during which it was found that long-term therapy with Zyprexa was rarely accompanied by dyskinesia, which would require drug intervention. But do not forget that there is a risk of late development of this condition.
If symptoms of dyskinesia are detected, then it is necessary to adjust the dose of the drug towards its reduction.
If there is a diagnosis of liver failure, the drug should be taken with extreme caution, especially with an increase in the activity of AST and ALT. If the indicators reach a critical level, then it is necessary to reduce the dosage of Zyprexa.
This medication should be used with caution if the patient has a history of seizures or is regularly exposed to factors that lower the seizure threshold.
If the patient's tests show a low number of white blood cells or neutrophils, then Zyprexa should be taken under the supervision of a doctor and with periodic monitoring of blood counts. This is what the instructions for use indicate. Zyprexa also requires special care during treatment with it if:
- There are signs of suppression or toxic dysfunction of the bone marrow.
- The presence of concomitant diseases that inhibit bone marrow function.
- If the patient has a history of radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
- Presence of hypereosinophilia.
During experimental studies, Zyprexa therapy was rarely accompanied by anticholinergic adverse effects, but experience with this drug in patients with concomitant diseases is small, so treatment, if necessary, should be carried out carefully and only under medical supervision.
Bowel obstruction and closed glaucoma are also grounds for careful therapy with Zyprexa. The effect of the drug on the central nervous system requires caution if combination with other drugs of similar effect is necessary.
The drug cannot be combined with alcohol, so you should not drink alcoholic beverages during therapy.
Considering that drowsiness may occur during treatment with Zyprexa, it is better to refrain from driving vehicles during this period, as well as from performing work that requires excessive concentration.
How does Zyprexa combine with other medications?
The metabolism of the main active ingredient of the drug may undergo changes under the influence of inhibitors or inducers of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes, which are active against CYP1A2. The clearance of Zyprexa increases significantly in patients who have a bad habit such as smoking and also take the drug Carbamazepine.
Clinical studies have proven that if a single dose of Zyprexa is taken during therapy with Warfarin, Theophylline, Diazepam, Imipramine, then a decrease in the metabolism of the latter was not observed.
Simultaneous use of the drug with alcoholic beverages can increase the sedative properties of the drug, which can lead to a weakening of concentration.
The combined use of Fluoxetine with Zyprexa leads to an increase in the maximum permissible concentration of the active substance olanzapine. But in all patients this factor may have different severity, so the dosage is adjusted strictly individually.
If Zyprexa is prescribed intramuscularly in conjunction with benzodiazepines, it is recommended to conduct a thorough examination of the patient's clinical condition regarding depression of the respiratory system and cardiac muscle. There have been no clinical studies of this combination of drugs, so it should be avoided if possible.
The administration of the drug is fraught with the development of bradycardia or a decrease in blood pressure, so such therapy should be carried out very carefully in patients who have problems with the cardiovascular system, fainting and sudden drops in pressure have been observed.
It is also worth noting that taking activated charcoal or antacid medications significantly reduces the absorption of Zyprexa in the intestinal tract, which may adversely affect the effectiveness of treatment.
Precautions during Zyprexa therapy
If there are factors that contribute to a slower metabolism of olanzapine, then the dosage should be reduced. These factors include:
- Female.
- Having a bad habit such as smoking.
- Senile age.
Despite the fact that Zyprexa is very often prescribed, such therapy requires special attention to patients who have or have experienced suicidal tendencies.
During therapy, the activity of liver transaminases should be monitored, this primarily applies to patients with impaired liver function.
For patients whose professional activities involve driving vehicles or performing work that requires special attention and concentration, the drug is prescribed with caution. If possible, it is replaced with another medicine.
If signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome appear in the form of elevated body temperature, tachycardia, muscle tension, then you should stop taking the drug.
Since therapy for motor restlessness with Zyprexa may result in the appearance of restlessness and a constant desire to move, the dosage should be slightly reduced and antiparkinsonian drugs should be prescribed.
Analogues of the drug
"Zyprexa" analogues have two groups:
- Synonyms, that is, having the same active ingredient. This group includes the following medications: Zalasta, Olanzapine, Parnasan, Olanex, Normiton.
- The second group includes drugs that have a similar pharmacological effect on the human body, for example: Azaleptin, Victoel, Ketilept, Cutipin, Laquel, Nantaride, Saphris and others.
If the doctor has prescribed the drug Zyprexa as therapy, you should not rush to select analogues, as you may not get the desired therapeutic effect. Only a doctor can help resolve this issue. The desire to replace the drug with an analogue is justified, because the price of the drug Zyprexa is quite high, but its effectiveness is still worth the money spent.
Reviews about the drug
Nowadays, almost every patient, before going to the pharmacy for a medicine prescribed by a doctor, will definitely ask for the opinion of those who have already undergone a course of treatment. "Zyprexa" reviews are most often positive. Patients who have undergone therapy with this drug note its high effectiveness. Even after the main course of treatment, most patients note that in maintenance doses the medicine does not allow the disease to return and there are practically no relapses. This medicine fights well against depression, of which after a course of therapy there is no trace left, and the desire to move on with life appears.
It is also worth noting that, despite the fact that Zyprexa has good reviews, many patients report unwanted effects. Especially often, as a result of such therapy, excess weight appears, metabolism is disrupted, some note restlessness and a desire to constantly do something.
Quite often, patients also complain that the cost of the drug is too high, which prevents some segments of the population from taking it.
Currently, doctors have a large number of drugs in their arsenal for one disease, but only after a complete examination can a doctor choose one of them. That is why you should not prescribe therapy yourself; the same medicine can have different effects on patients. It all depends on the characteristics of the body, general condition and course of the disease. This primarily concerns drugs for the treatment of diseases of the nervous system. Take care of yourself and be healthy!

"ZIPREXA": reviews
Due to prolonged depression and stress, I developed hallucinations and psychosis. I decided to undergo a clinical examination, after which I was prescribed the drug Zyprexa.
It is very effective and has proven itself on the positive side. At the beginning of taking this drug, the hallucinations decreased and then completely disappeared. My nervous state has decreased.
Despite the high cost of Zyprexa, it turned out to be very effective.
According to the instructions for use, Zaprexa is a strong drug for the treatment of various mental illnesses. But my doctor prescribed it to me for work-related nervous conditions. I have neurocirculatory dystonia, but Barboval no longer helped, and olanzapine in Zyprexa is considered harmless, so my doctor and I decided to try it.
This medicine can only be purchased with a prescription from your doctor and is very expensive. I don’t have a severe mental illness, I take it once a day, half a tablet at a dosage of 5 mg. A package lasts me about two months.
I prefer to take it before bed, because the first couple of hours after taking it you feel sleepy and tired. My sleep has become sound and in the morning I feel active and in a good mood, which is what I need at my job.
Zyprexa has a cumulative effect, so after a course of 2 months, I take a break from it for about three weeks, during which time my attacks do not bother me. Some people gain weight, but I’m not afraid of it with my 47 kg, it’s just happiness.
I was shocked when the doctor prescribed me Zyprexa, okay, I bought it at the pharmacy. I decided to read the annotation, but it turned out that it is taken for schizophrenia. I had to sit down and calm down, I thought that all these mood swings and tearfulness were due to my hormones.
Of course, it seemed to me that I was taking a light sleeping pill, I really wanted to sleep, my head was in a fog. I also had this before after phenazepam. In this regard, I started taking Zyprexa as soon as I came home from work, then took a shower and went straight to bed.
I didn’t even have dinner, maybe that’s why I lost a little weight. After a couple of weeks, the body got used to the drug, and the drowsiness disappeared. There was even some cheerfulness, I became stress-resistant and stopped complaining for no reason.
The doctor recommended that I take it constantly, half a tablet, at a dosage of 5 mg, but intermittently, Zyprexa helped me a lot.
Doctor's review:
An excellent, unusual antipsychotic with quite a strong effect, with the intention of comparing it with Haloperidol. Beyond the side effects of the end. Very comfortable in outpatient practice. Compared to generics, it functions more softly. The disadvantages include weight gain in patients and, in some cases, excessive sedation. And also the significant cost of the medication.
