By indicating personal qualities in your resume, you thereby give the employer a small description of yourself as a person. Personal characteristics are part of a set of factors that influence the efficiency of an office or enterprise, so recruiting managers take them into account when selecting candidates for a vacant position.
It is worth understanding that in the current realities, when thousands of new specialists in different fields appear every year, when the labor market is more than overcrowded and oversaturated, the applicant is invited to an interview for his qualifications and professional skills, but when choosing among two equal candidates, personal qualities in your CVs can make all the difference.
Examples of personal qualities for a resume
For your convenience, we have compiled examples of personal qualities for different professions. Don’t stupidly copy a list of other people’s qualities and assign them to yourself; be objective and write only what applies to you personally. It is enough to indicate five or six qualities that most accurately characterize you as a person and meet the requirements for the vacant position. For example, for creative areas creativity and good imagination are acceptable, and for technical areas – an analytical mind and attentiveness.

Recruiters constantly see the same phrases, sometimes they don’t even read this section, because the applicant listed a whole paragraph of all sorts of advantages. Get the person looking at your resume interested enough to want to meet with you. Use ready-made examples, but be original; some unusual detail can distinguish you from a dozen other candidates and attract attention. Below is a list of alternative descriptions to the standard set of personal qualities that are most often used in resumes.

It is a mistake to think that by indicating original, different personal qualities in your resume, you will be immediately contacted and invited for an interview. Originality is important but, as mentioned earlier, it is even more important that the personality characteristics that you assign to yourself correspond to you, and also correspond to the position you want.
The personal qualities section is placed at the end of the resume, after indicating education, work experience and professional skills. See resume templates.
The need to provide
The characteristics do not belong to the category of documents, the need to provide which is regulated by labor law norms.
However, describing an employee on the positive side in the context of professional and personal qualities adds “points”:
- for getting a job;
- when considering a candidacy for a bank loan;
- when participating in litigation and calls from law enforcement agencies;
- for transfer to another organization and registration of external part-time work;
- when providing information to the guardianship and trusteeship authorities;
- when reviewing documents by the fiscal service, social funds and labor inspectorate in the event of controversial situations.
- What to write in a resume for a job
There is no specific list of authorities where characterization is required, since the document is not mandatory. However, employee interest in providing encourages them to write it themselves or receive it from the employer. Based on Article 62 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, an enterprise is obliged to issue a document at the request of an employee within three working days from the date of application by submitting an appropriate application in writing.
A common mistake of many employers is a formal approach to filling out the document or absence from the enterprise, while the characteristics of employees should be in the “tablets” of personnel services, periodically updated with work and personal achievements.
When requested by third-party organizations, a note is made in the characteristics, where they are presented indicating the current date and certified by the signature of the manager. There is no validity period for the document at the legislative level, since there is no need to provide it. Upon dismissal for subsequent employment, a job description can be given to the employee.
Self-presentation
The recruiter begins to evaluate this skill from the moment he studies the resume. The way a resume is written and formatted speaks volumes. The absence of errors characterizes the candidate as a literate person. Neat and carefully formatted text shows that the candidate is attentive. The ability to express thoughts clearly and simply speaks about a person’s intelligence. And finally, the one who knows how to present himself correctly and beautifully will be liked by the recruiter, the manager and the team. You need to learn to present yourself, especially if you have to work with clients or manage a project and represent the company in negotiations. There are a lot of special techniques with which you can perfectly master the art of self-presentation.
Responsibility and what should not be allowed
When drawing up a document, it is prohibited:
- write offensive language;
- hurt someone's honor and dignity;
- distort facts;
- deliberately belittle business achievements;
- provide knowingly false information.
A typical characteristic should reveal as much as possible the character of a person, whether he is a loader in a warehouse, a legal adviser with many years of experience, or a seller of household goods. You must write without speech, punctuation and grammatical errors.
Responsibility for the information provided lies with the person who signed the form and compiled the document. If a manager writes about a subordinate, then under no circumstances should the reference be made in a biased manner. Impartial presentation of information will help avoid problems.
Compliance with corporate culture
In large companies, this factor is always taken into account by the recruiter. Where they pay high wages, they select employees carefully. The dismissal of a specialist has a painful impact on the state of the company, and the search for a new one is an extra unwanted expense. Therefore, when selecting a candidate for a vacancy, recruiters, in addition to professional qualities, find out how suitable the person is for the company, whether he will be comfortable working, and whether the company will have problems with him. If corporate values run counter to the candidate’s life principles, then most likely he will not be hired. When applying for a vacancy in the company of your dreams, you need to inquire in advance about the company’s policies, what the values are in the team, and who works there. This way, you can understand how suitable this job is for you and have the opportunity to prepare for the recruiter’s questions.
Employee disagreement with content
Certifications are the only case where an employee can disagree with the description and challenge the description in court if management has violated his rights. The claim is sent to the magistrate indicating all the claims and a package of evidence confirming the incorrectness of the information provided in the compiled description.
The following are attached to the application:
- sample of the disputed letter;
- Certificates of honor, Diplomas and other awards, if any.
Having considered the complaint and familiarized itself with the evidence, the court will either invalidate the information or leave everything as it is.
Weak personal qualities shouldn't ruin your resume.
There is no ideal candidate for the position. All employers know this, although many dream about it. Every person has weaknesses. To emphasize your honesty and openness, you can indicate a couple of negative qualities in your resume, but in a mild form.
For example, you don’t need to write that you are a supporter of an authoritarian system of government. Write that you love discipline and demand quality work from your subordinates. You allow yourself to criticize your subordinates, but are ready to help them improve their performance.
If you cannot mitigate negative qualities, it is better not to mention them in your resume. But they need to be formulated; HR will definitely touch on this topic during the interview. Therefore, it is better to prepare for such a conversation in advance.

What kind of document is this
Every person strives to find a well-paid job with prospects for career growth and a full social package. Organizational leaders are interested in how a person has proven himself in his previous workplace and what complaints his former employer has. Many companies ask for a reference from a previous place of work. Paper is also required for transmission to various authorities.
A job description is a document that does not have a unified form. It is drawn up on a regular sheet of paper, indicating all the details required by law. The document must contain the following information about the staff member:
- personal data;
- professional skills;
- human qualities;
- ability to get along with a team;
- performance indicators, etc.
How to make a negative
The reasons why an employer issues a negative reference for an employee are related to the latter’s actions:
- disruptions in work that resulted in financial losses;
- the reputation of the enterprise has been damaged;
- failure to implement plans;
- conflict, etc.
A negative characteristic is drawn up using the same algorithm as a positive one:
- Information about the compiler - name of the institution, address, other details.
- Information about the employee - age, passport details, position.
- Purpose and place of presentation.
- Position and responsibilities.
- Description of professional and personal qualities.
- Other information that the employer wishes to provide.
- Date, manager's signature.
When drawing up such a document, it is important to objectively reflect the information and support it with facts. Here is how a negative reference was made for a woman from work who has repeatedly failed to fulfill her job duties without good reason in the presence of a disciplinary sanction:

When selling products to clients, she provided them with false information about its characteristics, which resulted in financial losses for 15 clients of the enterprise. For this reason, the organization received 15 complaints about the employee’s actions in 2020. In total, as a result of such actions, 95 clients refused to cooperate with the company in 2019–2020. She proved herself to be a disorganized and undisciplined employee and neglected internal work regulations. Over the 5 months of 2020, E. P. Fedorova was late for the start of the working day 10 times (from 1 hour to 3 hours). As a result, she was given a disciplinary sanction in the form of a reprimand (order dated May 11, 2020 No. 10). She did not strive to improve her professional level and refused to take 4 advanced training courses.
