Dyslexia in children: symptoms, diagnosis, treatment

Personal experience

1. First, I want to clarify that you may notice familiar symptoms, but this is not at all an indicator that you suffer from dyslexia, to know for sure, consult a psychiatrist. I lived for 26 years with dyslexia and did not know about it, I thought that I was just stupid and inattentive lol

2. I thought this way because of suggestions from others: teachers, classmates, parents. A few months ago, I came to my psychiatrist with mental illness, I had to read her a letter to my grandmother. I warned her that I have problems reading, so I will read strangely

3. She listened to me, asked all sorts of questions about my childhood, how I read, etc., and made a “diagnosis” that I already suspected. In quotes because it is not a disease, it is rather a difficulty. People with dyslexia do not have problems with speech or writing and can read, although with difficulty

4. I was considered stupid until the 7th grade, and in grades 1-2 I stayed for the summer because I had a number of reading skills in the year. Throughout June I sat with the teacher who hung over me like a kite and slapped me on the back of the head because I wasn’t up to par. even up to 1/2 the norm of reading words per minute

6. Teachers gave up on me.:) But not a strict biological scientist. Somehow it happened that in the 7th grade I received the first 5 in my life for a non-creative subject, in biology. After the lesson, the teacher came up to me and said “now it will always be like this.” And so it happened 5 I got a trace. way:

7. My mother suggested that I read the paragraph about the gastrointestinal tract of pigeons out loud several times, so that it would be easier for me to remember the information, and it worked. So I finished my studies until 12th grade. 4 were only in physics, chemistry, mathematics and Estonian, the rest 5. I just read everything to my mother

8. I confused the words, became stupid, and hung on the floor. But after the 3rd reading, I calmly went to class and told everything as it should. At university, I heard the word dyslexia for the first time, three of my classmates had it and I thought “pfft, these British whiners are always inventing problems for themselves.”

Forms of the disease

In speech therapy, dyslexia is divided into several forms:

  1. Phonemic dyslexia , when children rearrange sounds in similar words and cannot distinguish them by meaning (this type of disorder is otherwise called acoustic dyslexia);
  2. Semantic dyslexia or rote reading . The child reads clearly and distinctly, but then cannot convey the meaning of what he read;
  3. Agrammatic dyslexia - the child puts incorrect endings and cases in words, inflects words incorrectly, for example: beautiful doll, sleep in place of sleep, etc.;
  4. Optical dyslexia , when a child cannot remember which sound corresponds to which letter. For example, letters from similar elements - E and S, or B and Y;
  5. Mnestic dyslexia , when a sound is pronounced, the child is not able to show it in the alphabet;
  6. Tactile dyslexia is a special disorder of reading Braille in blind children, when difficulties arise in the tactile differentiation of letters.

All types of dyslexia cause children learning difficulties both at primary school age and during their student years. Such children do not like to read, they have a small vocabulary, which can harm their career, communication, and just interpersonal relationships.

What to do when diagnosed with dyslexia, how to treat a child who has been diagnosed with this? Do not despair; this deviation can be corrected in children at any age, even in teenagers, even in adults. However, timely diagnosed dyslexia in younger schoolchildren is more easily neutralized. Dr. Davis' method produces excellent results. There is a set of physical exercises to develop memory, motor skills, and attentiveness, which give wonderful results.

It goes without saying that treatment should be prescribed by an experienced doctor; on the part of parents, in addition to following the doctor’s recommendations, it is necessary to create conditions for observing the daily routine. It is recommended to read to your child more often, and then ask him to retell what he heard. The main principle of treatment is the joint efforts of the doctor and parents.

Early correction and diagnosis of dyslexia is very important for the future baby. It is clear that this disease will interfere with a person’s life. If measures are not taken to correct the disease, the child will have problems with academic performance in the future, and even later it may cause low self-esteem.

However, of course this is not a death sentence. Along with correcting and helping your child with dyslexia, parents should comprehensively develop your child’s other talents. Dyslexia also affects adults whose parents were not attentive to their children and believed that their learning problems were simply a lack of ability and laziness. There is an opinion that dyslexia in adults cannot be corrected. This is far from true. The same treatment is used for adults as for children, slightly modified according to age, and gives excellent results.

Possible symptoms

How dyslexia manifested itself in the author of the thread and how it feels - the coincidence of all the symptoms is not necessary, but it can be considered a wake-up call if you saw yourself in several points at once.
