Physiological causes of tearfulness, nervousness and irritability
Quite often, increased reactivity of the nervous system is an innate property: in this case, a person from childhood demonstrates the ability to instantly “get turned on” in response to the action of insignificant, generally irritating factors. But if such a problem appeared in adulthood, it makes sense to undergo a medical examination with a mandatory check of hormonal levels.
This is especially true for women, since their physiological characteristics require constant fluctuations in the level of sex hormones. During pregnancy and menopause, as well as with pronounced premenstrual syndrome, mood swings, unmotivated attacks of anger and a tendency to tearfulness are not uncommon. But PMS, which usually lasts for several days, is one thing, and prolonged periods of depressed mood and nervousness are quite another.
The cause of constant irritability may be:
- Chronic thyroid disease: hypothyroidism usually makes a person more sluggish and inert, while hyperthyroidism causes serious problems with self-control;
- Migraine. Attacks of this incurable systemic disease can cause excruciating headaches, coupled with a number of other symptoms (nausea, vomiting, dizziness, photophobia, impaired perception, etc.), including irritability;
- Low blood sugar. The most characteristic manifestations of this condition are confusion and fatigue, but unmotivated aggression and irritation can also indicate a drop in sugar levels: in this case, you should eat a small portion of food high in so-called “fast” carbohydrates and wait 20-25 minutes;
- Chronic liver diseases, in particular cirrhosis and hepatitis. Toxins that accumulate in the body, which the liver is not able to neutralize in a timely manner due to illness, negatively affect the nervous system, causing inadequate reactions to external stimuli;
- Vitamin deficiency: it’s scary to even think how much a banal lack of B vitamins can affect a person’s behavior. Sudden mood swings, even after a long rest, hyperreactivity of the nervous system are not all the manifestations of vitamin deficiency. By balancing your diet, you can eliminate the main cause of anger and irritability in a relatively short time;
- Sleep disorders. Insomnia, interrupted sleep, nightmares, hypersomnia and other sleep problems, which, according to objective data, affect up to 30% of the adult population of the planet, make us irritable and restless. It is enough to take measures to improve the quality of sleep so that the problem of irritability is solved by itself;
- Dementia, which usually occurs in older people as a result of certain age-related changes or a stroke. Sometimes dementia is diagnosed in relatively young patients: it can be caused by traumatic brain injury, infectious disease, abuse of psychotropic and narcotic drugs, and alcohol.
What to do
First of all, you need to know that even if you gather all your will into a fist, you cannot get rid of tearfulness, because the reason for such emotionality does not lie at all in capriciousness and poor upbringing.
- If your eyes are already wet, try to abstract yourself from the surrounding reality, not allowing emotions and impressions to take over your consciousness and mind. Try taking a few vigorous, but not deep, breaths (this may be much more difficult than it seems at first glance). But such an exercise is simply necessary in order to calm your nerves without causing dizziness. Also, if tears are your good friends, always keep a glass or bottle of water handy. Drink water, pay attention: your sips should be small, and count each sip.
- When. If something has upset you too much and tears are about to flow from your eyes, mentally draw in your mind any object with a lot of small details, and then try to look at every little detail with great attention. Do not stop exercising until your consciousness switches completely and the lump in your throat melts.
- Methods that involve some physical actions are also considered effective. For example, frequent blinking helps tears stop, and pinching your nose can block tear ducts. If tears still flow, pinch yourself; the feeling of slight physical pain distracts you from mental torment. And finally, physically remove yourself from the problem, in the truest sense of the word.
