Spaghetti pumpkin will surely appeal to fans of garden innovations. Its barely sweet fruits are not only extremely tasty, but also healthy. Let's find out how to plant and grow this original pumpkin in your garden, and how it differs from ordinary varieties.

It’s not without reason that this pumpkin was called “Spaghetti” or “pasta” - when the fruit ripens, its flesh becomes fibrous. Thin yellow fibers look like pasta. After cooking, the resemblance to spaghetti intensifies.

This unusual pumpkin appeared in Russia quite recently, but has already become popular among our gardeners. In fact, “Spaghetti” is not exactly a pumpkin, it is a hybrid obtained by crossing pumpkin with zucchini.

Another name for macaroni pumpkin is “squash”. This word comes from the language of North American Indians. It is translated as “eaten raw.”

This is what the flesh of a ripe spaghetti pumpkin looks like

Brief description of the Spaghetti variety:

  • Plant. It has a powerful root system and requires a lot of space. The lashes are long, growing up to 4.5 m in length. The stems are hollow, covered with hard hair.
  • Leaves. Large, green, wide-legged. It looks like ordinary pumpkin tops.
  • Flowers. Large, bright yellow or orange.
  • Fruit. Shape – round or oval. The peel is light yellow or deep yellow. The pulp is fibrous, medium-dense, bright yellow or orange in color, with the aroma of vanilla and walnut. The length of the fruit is up to 30 cm. Inside the fruit there are elongated seeds.

Spaghetti pulp has a low calorie content, 100 g contains only 25 kcal.

Features of the variety:

  • Bloom. Lasts from June to October. These are the dates for the middle zone; in other regions they are adjusted in accordance with climatic conditions.
  • Precocity. Approximately 2 months pass between emergence and harvest. The growing season is 110-120 days.
  • Productivity. Up to a dozen pumpkins grow on one bush. The average fruit weight is 4 kg. One bush gives 20-30 kg.
  • Storage. The fruits are stored for no more than 2 months. To increase shelf life, the pumpkin is well dried in the sun before storing. The optimal room temperature is from 3 to 10°C.

The best option for growing seedlings is in peat tablets. Then you can do without picking. Pumpkin seedlings do not tolerate transplantation well, and it is not worth replanting them again.

If there are no peat tablets, you can use ordinary wooden boxes. Fill them with a mixture purchased at an agricultural store - a universal substrate or soil mixture for cucumbers will do.

Seedlings can also be grown in individual glasses or pots with a diameter of 6 cm.

Soil for seedlings can be prepared by mixing peat, humus and sawdust in a ratio of 2:1:1. For each kilogram of the mixture add a teaspoon of nitrophoska. Before planting, the soil must be disinfected.

Sowing seeds for seedlings usually begins in mid-April. Seedlings are planted in open ground from the second half of May. These are recommendations for the middle band. In other regions it is necessary to make adjustments for climate.

Seeds are sown in open ground at the end of May.

Seeds are bought at an agricultural store or collected from fruits in the fall. They are dried at normal temperature. You cannot dry it in the oven - the seeds will die. Until spring sowing, the seeds are stored in the dark and dry, preferably in a linen bag.

Before sowing, prepare the seeds:

  • Sort out the seeds. Only large ones are suitable, throw away small ones and empty ones.
  • Soak the seeds in warm water. Let them sit overnight.
  • Remove the seeds from the water and wrap them in a damp cloth - let them sit for 2-3 days. To make the seeds germinate faster, moisten the cloth with water from time to time.
  • Place the sprouted seeds in the refrigerator for three days to harden.
  • To disinfect the seeds, soak them in a 2% solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour.

Sprouted seeds are ready for planting - you can plant them in containers with soil or directly into open ground.

Seedling care

Features of caring for seedlings:

  • To prevent the seedlings from stretching, remove the film as soon as the shoots appear.
  • Seedlings need light - place them in a well-lit place. It is best to place it on the windowsill of a window facing south.
  • Maintain the optimal temperature – from 15 to 25 °C. If it is too warm, the seedlings will be very tall, and in the cold they will begin to lag in growth and get sick.
  • Water the seedlings regularly; the soil should not dry out. Use warm, settled or boiled water, try not to get it on the leaves.
  • A week after germination, fertilize the seedlings. Prepare a solution - put 2 g of nitrophoska per liter of water. Pour liquid fertilizers under the roots - they should not get on the leaves, otherwise there will be a burn. Or feed the seedlings with a mullein solution (1 part mullein to 10 parts water).
  • 14 days before planting seedlings in the ground, begin hardening. Take her outside every day. Start with 20 minutes and increase the duration of walks to 2-3 hours.

Features of planting seedlings:

  • Deadlines. Seedlings are planted approximately a month after planting the seeds. But you cannot focus only on the number of days that have passed since sowing - a stable above-zero temperature must be established outside. The seedlings must have at least two full leaves.
  • Plot. Choose a place taking into account the size of the plant - Spaghetti pumpkin needs space. The crop grows well in fertile sunny areas; this pumpkin will not bear fruit in the shade.
  • Predecessors and neighbors. The crop grows well after tomatoes, potatoes and legumes. It is forbidden to plant “Spaghetti” after cucumbers, squash and zucchini. But it can coexist with them, as well as with melons, corn, and peas. Growing near them, squash pumpkin produces good yields and does not get sick.

The soil is prepared in the fall:

  • The area is fertilized with manure - per 1 square. m pour 4 kg.
  • The beds are being dug up.
  • If the soil is acidic, add 200 g of ash per 1 square meter. m.

The order of planting seedlings:

  • Half a month before planting, cover the area with black film to warm the soil better.
  • Prepare holes 10-12 cm deep. The distance between them is 80 cm.
  • Pour hot water over the holes. After the water is absorbed, plant the seedlings. If the seedlings grew in peat tablets, there is no need to shake off the soil from the roots. If in boxes, take the seedlings so that there is some soil left on the roots.
  • Cover the roots with soil and firm it down with your hand.

It is best to plant seedlings in cloudy weather or in the evening.

In order for the Spaghetti pumpkin to produce a full harvest, the plant requires, in addition to the usual agrotechnical measures, pinching.

Features of watering spaghetti squash:

  • Young seedlings, just planted in the ground, are watered as the soil dries out.
  • Watering rate is 8 liters per plant.
  • In the future, the recommended frequency of watering is once every 3-4 days. In hot weather, the frequency of watering doubles.
  • The best time for watering is morning and evening.
  • Water the pumpkin at the root - moisture should not get on the leaves and stems.
  • The variety is drought-resistant and does not respond well to excess moisture. Overwatering leads to fungal diseases.

Weeding and loosening

The soil is loosened regularly - after every rain and watering. Thanks to loosening, the soil allows oxygen to pass through well - pumpkin roots need it in large quantities. Loosened soil also allows water and fertilizers to pass through well.

Weeds are removed during loosening. When the pumpkin grows, there is no need to weed the area - this powerful plant suppresses the growth of weeds. But he needs hilling - this is done every 3 weeks.

Fruit harvesting usually occurs in the second half of September to the first half of October. In general, about 4 months pass from the moment of sowing to the ripeness of the fruit. The first sign that it is time to harvest is wilted green mass.

If the summer is cool, the leaves do not wither, but it is still time to pick the fruits.

The collected pumpkins are dried in the sun and stored for 3-4 months in a cool, dark room, following storage rules.

Spaghetti pumpkin is very tasty. It can be:

  • bake in the oven - half an hour is enough to achieve readiness;
  • fry;
  • boil for 20 minutes;
  • preserve;
  • cook on the grill - in slices.

The agricultural technology of “Spaghetti” is the same as that of ordinary pumpkins. But there are still some differences and difficulties in growing:

  • The plant does not stop flowering. The scourge is constantly growing. There are many fruits on the central and side stems. It is imperative to pinch the shoots, shaping the plant and limiting its growth in certain directions.
  • In rainy and cool weather, most fruits do not ripen, and those that do ripen rot during storage.

Just like other species, macaroni pumpkin is a heat-loving plant and quite difficult to grow. In our climate, it is usually grown from seedlings, since it does not tolerate temperatures around 0 °C. If you plan to sow directly into the ground, then only after the passage of spring frosts (after May 15).

This species requires a warm, sunny place, protected from the winds. For proper growth and fruit set, it requires abundant, systematic watering. It grows best in fertilized, fertile soil that retains water well. Does not grow well in heavy, cold, dry and too wet soils.

Since pumpkin has very high nutritional requirements, it grows best in soil that has been enriched with manure or compost before planting. One of the best ways to grow plants from the pumpkin family is to plant them on a substrate of dark non-woven material or black, impermeable film.

Such a substrate has many advantages and solves many problems. First of all, it allows you to maintain the necessary soil moisture and prevents the development of weeds. In addition, it protects the developing fruit from direct contact with the soil (by the way, it reduces the risk of fungal diseases on vegetables), and the dark color allows you to raise the temperature of the substrate. Due to the danger from diseases and pests, macaroni pumpkin cannot be grown after other vegetables of the same family, even after 4-5 years.
